An example of a religion that has a transcendent world view is Islam. Islamic followers believe that the will of Allah is their saviour together with a Prophet named Mohammed. These readings are found in the Islamic writings of the holy book, The Quran. This is a transcendent worldview because the divine being (Allah) is seen to be separate to the physical world and is revealed to human kind through an intermediary, meaning a spiritual connection.
A religion that has an immanent world view is Buddhism. Buddhism strives to follow the teachings of Buddha and is more like a way of life living day to day. This religion believes in the concept of karma, which essentially means ’cause and effect’. For every action performed, you are rewarded or punished by the immanent being or higher spirit.
As for what characteristics define a religion, there are four main ideas. These are ‘beliefs & believers’, ‘sacred texts and writings’, ‘ethics’, and ‘rituals and ceremonies’. These characteristics are what make a religion dynamic and attract people to follow or in many cases people are born into. Religion is passed on from generation to generation and provide beliefs and ethics for people to follow. Through the various meanings and interpretations of sacred texts, rituals and ceremonies that are performed, they allow good and hope into this physical world.
Christianity actually has both immanent and transcendent dimensions. The transcendent dimension follows the Jewish conventions whilst an immanent presence is present in Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus is an active and continuing presence among believers in this world. This belief is further extended in a Christian act of worship, prayer and church. If Christians pray to Jesus they believe that he will listen and possible answer their prayers and intervene in the earthly world of humans.
